SUMMARY

Under general supervision, to assist special needs children in student entrance of bus, student exiting from the bus, and student management as it relates to seated positions and seat occupancy, to receive the special needs student from the parent or guardian, walking the preschool student across the road, being responsible for the accountability of all special needs students on the bus; and to do other related work as required.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist special needs student entrance of the bus.
  • Assist special needs student exit from bus.
  • Receive/deliver special needs student from/to the teacher/aid at the school.
  • Deliver and receive the child safely to and from the parent, guardian or person authorized by the parent in writing.
  • Special needs children who cross the roadway shall be escorted by the bus aide.
  • Special needs children shall not be left unattended at time of delivery. 
  • If the parent/guardian is not present upon delivery, the child shall be taken to a prearranged location.
  • Report to the driver any behaviors or incidents that may affect the safety or well-being of special needs children riding the bus.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.
  • Respond to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns.
  • Assist children with special learning needs and physical handicaps.
  • Maintain confidentiality of school related business.
  • Operate mobility and other special needs equipment according to manufacture      guidelines.
  • Respond appropriately to all exceptional needs of students.
  • Administer first aid as required, and contact appropriate administrators in case of      serious injury or illness.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Safety rules for transportation;

Basic first aid procedures and methods;

 

Ability to:

Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment;

Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy;

Must be at least 21 years old.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position

classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of

force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities.

This type of work involves riding a student transportation vehicle, sitting during

much of the assignment, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.

Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral

information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and

work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge

and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

 

Experience:

Completion of a school bus aid training program.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

 

License and Certificate Requirement

Possession of a valid Kentucky Motor Vehicle Operator's License;

 

Condition of Employment

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.
